10 million copies of Minecraft – Pocket Edition sold! http://mojang.com/2013/04/10-million-copies-of-minecraft-pocket-edition-sold/ http://mojang.com/2013/04/10-million-copies-of-minecraft-pocket-edition-sold/#comments Mon, 29 Apr 2013 15:51:08 +0000 Daniel Kaplan http://mojang.com/?p=4215

First, we are very happy to announce that Minecraft – Pocket Edition has sold more than 10 million copies as of yesterday. We are very thankful to all the support that we have gotten and people playing and talking about our game.

So…I know what you are thinking. “Yeah, 10m is cool but where is the next update?” We have been working hard on restructuring the backend of a lot of things for Minecraft – Pocket Edition to make future updates smoother. For instance, you can now change options without jumping back to the main menu. What you can also notice is that we have in one of our menues (more to come in the future) an experimental title where we will put in features that will work for more high end devices. The reason to put in in experimental is because we first want to test out features before making them default on.

One other big thing we have been working on is Minecraft Realms. You can read what it is here. Short story: Minecraft Realms is a cloud service that lets players play together in a more convenient manner :) No need to be online at the same time to build on your project. The basic functions for Realms are in place but there is some tweaking to be done. In the first phase of the Pocket Realms we are going to limit it to the amount of servers that people are able to create. We won’t charge you for anything and it is basically first-come first-serve. We want to make sure things work before releasing it to everyone :)

Oh! And buckets will be in the coming release too!

When will I get the update?
The plan is to have it out by the end of May. We hope that we won’t run into some nasty bugs with the work we have currently done, but I will keep you posted on how it goes :)

Minecraft Papercraft Studio now features mobs! http://mojang.com/2013/04/minecraft-papercraft-studio-now-features-mobs/ http://mojang.com/2013/04/minecraft-papercraft-studio-now-features-mobs/#comments Fri, 26 Apr 2013 09:02:12 +0000 Owen http://mojang.com/?p=4193

Minecraft Papercraft Studio just got cuter! You might remember us mentioning the app a few months ago: it gives you the chance to print out a template of your avatar skin before crafting it into a real-life model. Rewarding stuff for crafty Minecrafters.

Now Papercraft Studio includes templates for 18 mobs, giving you the chance to create an exotic diorama with your favourite Minecraft friends/enemies. They’ve also patched in support for armour, and tweaked the menus to make things a bit easier to use.

To celebrate the update, the nice chaps at 57digital have knocked $1 off the price of their apps for the next week. That includes Papercraft Studio, Skin Studio, and Minecraft Explorer Pro. All apps currently cost $1.99 USD/€1,79 EUR/£1.49 GBP.

Oh, and here’s a gif of a papercraft sheep for your viewing pleasure. Click it for the relevant app store link. Have a great weekend!

Next up, we have the snapshot! Not too much has changed on the surface since 13w17a as most of our efforts are focused on the launcher currently, but there’s a few cool things you’ll want to check out:

  • Added a new “Hardened Clay” block
  • Added extra tooltip info in the search tab for the creative inventory
  • Made deserts more deserty
  • Zombies made slightly more sociable
  • Bug fixes!

You’ll need to (re-)download the new launcher to grab the snapshot.

Minecraft Snapshot 13w16a and New Launcher http://mojang.com/2013/04/minecraft-snapshot-13w16a-and-new-launcher/ http://mojang.com/2013/04/minecraft-snapshot-13w16a-and-new-launcher/#comments Thu, 18 Apr 2013 18:22:29 +0000 Jens Bergensten http://mojang.com/?p=4168

Update (23rd): Released ‘b’ snapshot for crash fixes!

Hey hey!

It’s time for us to release the first snapshot from the development of 1.6. This version of Minecraft comes with huge changes to the base technology of the game. For instance, starting from Minecraft 1.6, we will build the game for Java 6 instead of Java 5. We are also aiming to raise the required OpenGL version to 2.0 (from 1.2 / 1.3, that Minecraft 1.5 and prior versions are using). Additionally we are working on a new launcher that will support these libraries, and also come with a bunch of new features such as version changing, detailed game settings, and so on.

It will obviously take a few more weeks to get everything in place, so please let us hear your opinions on the new technology and launcher. Send tweets to either @Dinnerbone, @_grum, or @jeb_, or make a post on r/minecraftsuggestions.

This snapshot in bullet point form:

  • Added horses, based on the work of John Olarte (DrZhark), of Mo’ Creatures fame
  • Added hay bales
  • Added leashes
  • Added carpets
  • The “Respiration” enchantment now also helps seeing underwater

To get the snapshot, use the new launcher available in the link below. To return to 1.5.1, simply start the old launcher and play as normal.

Update: April fools! :)

Minecraft PC edition is about to hit 10,000,000 sales. I don’t know about you guys, but we’re really excited about this major milestone in Minecraft history. We decided that this would be the perfec ]]>

Hopefully releasing within the next two months, this 2-years-in-development game will be bringing blocky simulation games to the next level. Whilst based off the original Minecraft engine, this new version completely overhauls major parts of the game and contains many weeks worth of new content and blocks. Currently in closed beta stage, we have secretly been working with a select few members of the community to participate and trial run some specific features from the new version. Neither Mojang nor Minecraft would be where it is today without its community, so we felt it fitting that we let them make the trailer videos and announcements for us, which are visible below.

Sneak-peek videos

What changed?

Whilst we aren’t nearly finished with the 2.0 update, we do have a partial changelog of what we’ve done so far. There’s much more to come, this is only the beginning!

Gameplay

  • Added new Super Hostile game mode, for a much more challenging Survival experience.
  • Difficulty setting is now per-world and may never be changed once set.
  • Added new graphics setting “Ultra Realistic” with new patent-pending experimental 4D-rendering.
  • Added new chase-style 3D camera perspective.

Animals

  • Added new realistic food/hunger system to animals.
  • Overfeeding animals may have a negative effect on gameplay.
  • Added a new “Horse” animal, with two different breeds to choose from.
  • Each animal now has a gender and personality, introducing new farming mechanics.
  • Added a new rare breed of chicken known as a “Diamond Chicken”.
    • May lay diamonds or lapis instead of laying eggs.
    • May also blow up from too much pressure. Handle with care.
  • Added new friendly Pink Wither, which is the complete opposite of a wither.
    • Shoots out Love, which heals the nearby land and causes things to grow faster.
    • Known bug: Having both a Pink Wither and a Wither in your world at the same time may cause up to a 200% increase in framerate. Will be fixed for launch.
  • All animals may be fed Golden Apples to unleash their hidden magical properties (see new Magic section).
  • Chickens are now classified as a Monster and are no longer a friendly Animal.

Monsters

  • Chickens do not appreciate being looked at and may get upset.
  • Attacking a lone chicken may summon additional chickens to its defense.
  • Zombie Pigmen now spawn with battlesigns and no longer use swords.
  • Fixed a bug causing Skeletons to miss their targets on occasion.
  • Added new Redstone Bug monster (see Redstone section).

Blocks

  • Furnaces have a new “heat” mechanic.
  • Heat needs to be regulated in furnaces or they will blow up.
  • Torches now burn out after a period of time, but may be relit with flint and steel.
  • Added new TNT slab, known as an Etho Slab.
  • Renamed Droppers to floppers, by popular community demand.
    • Droppers were deemed too powerful and go against our original vision of the game.
    • Floppers now turn everything that passes through them into raw fish (see Fishing section).
  • Added six (6) new decoration blocks:
    • Mud.
    • Hay bales.
    • Lapis Lazuli.
    • Slime blocks.
  • Added new compressed storage blocks for commonly mined ores:
    • Coal Block.
    • Lapis Lazuli Block.
    • Redstone Block Block.
  • Lapis may now be used for new Lapis furniture.
  • Added dyed glass.
  • Walking over many blocks will gradually wear them down, creating many new block variants such as Cracked Stone and Muddy Grass.

Redstone

  • Removed all BUD behaviour, and added safeguards so that it may never come back.
  • Made redstone bugs spawn actual Redstone Bugs to assist with debugging.
  • Added new Quantum Entangled redstone, obtained by mixing 1 redstone, 1 diamond and 3 lapis.
    • One entangled redstone dust will connect to another pair elsewhere.
    • No current way of specifying the connection, may in fact connect to another player’s world.
  • Added new BUD blocks.

Magic

  • Added new Magic and Luck levels per player.
  • Finding a Rainbow after rain passes will be the primary way of obtaining Magic.
  • Finding a green-tinted horse will be the primary way of obtaining Luck.
  • Added new spell system, costing magic to perform a spell.
  • Spells may backfire, depending on Luck.
  • Examples of new spells include:
    • Turn any item into Fish.
    • Turn current biome into another biome (bug: currently only turns into ocean).
    • Ability to remove gravity from other creatures/players in the world.

Fishing

  • Overhauled fishing mechanics.
  • New special types of fish may be found in various different biomes.
  • Fish may become scared if too much noise is made nearby.
  • Added 28 new achievements for fishing.
  • Rare chance for extra items to drop when fishing, such as armor and maps.
  • Removed fishing.
  • Having a fish in your possession will drain your health by 1 each second, to help phase out fishing.

Combat

  • Removed crossbows.
  • To deter cheating players on PvP servers, the PvP system has been completely redesigned.
  • Players may no longer attack other players directly, but must recruit an army of Monsters and Animals.
  • Each monster/animal has different strengths, weaknesses and abilities whilst attacking or defending in PvP combat.
  • New turn-based combat system will help create epic battles that may last hours at a time.

World generation & terrain

  • Added many new mysterious adventuring locations.
  • Added 6 new biomes.
  • Reimplemented the Farlands.
    • Going near the farlands will forcefully enable 3d anaglyph.
    • Known bug: Teleporting towards the farlands may send you half way in the opposite direction.
  • Added dozens of new village building templates.
  • Flattened all terrain out slightly, with the exception of the hills biome to make it seem bigger by contrast.
  • Added floating sky islands.

Do you remember Beetlejuice? The surreal 1988 Tim Burton movie with an abundance of black and white stripes? It’s the inspiration behind this trippy Minecraft roller coaster, and one of our favourite creations to come out of XBOX 360 edition so far. It’s also maximum wub wub.

Stellar work RivergrlI21 and Nuropsych1!

What is Minecraft Realms anyway? http://mojang.com/2013/03/what-is-minecraft-realms-anyway/ http://mojang.com/2013/03/what-is-minecraft-realms-anyway/#comments Wed, 20 Mar 2013 09:29:34 +0000 Daniel Kaplan http://mojang.com/?p=4026

Hey hey!
We’ve received a bunch of questions about Minecraft Realms. Here’s an attempt to answer most of them :)

A select group of players now have access to the Minecraft Realms limited alpha test. Minecraft Realms is a service designed to let players play on a server together with minimal setup, and will be available to the public later this year.

Will this change the way I play Minecraft?
Nothing will change regarding how you create, setup, or host servers today. Minecraft Realms is an additional service of hosting servers for those who want it. Nothing is mandatory.

How can I get into the Realms closed Alpha?
You can’t yet sorry. It’s a private, invite-only thing. Keep an eye on this blog for more info!

How much does it cost?
We’re not sure yet. It will be a subscription service. One subscription = one server. Only the host needs to pay. The host can invite (whitelist) friends to play on his/her server.

How many players can play together?
This is not confirmed yet. During the closed alpha we have set a limit of ten players to test out our systems.

What is Minecraft Pocket Realms?
It is the mobile version of our Realms service.

How much will Pocket Realms cost?
We’re not sure yet. It will be a subscription service. One subscription = one server. Only the host needs to pay. The host can invite (whitelist) friends to play on his/her server.

How do I buy a Pocket Realms subscription?
Realms subscriptions will be available via an in-app purchase within Minecraft – Pocket Edition. You’ll need to log in with your Mojang Account to use the service. If you don’t have an account you’ll be asked to create one.

This is all the info we have right now. We’ll keep you updated as things develop!

Have a nice day!

Minecraft 1.5.1 Pre-release http://mojang.com/2013/03/minecraft-1-5-1-pre-release/ http://mojang.com/2013/03/minecraft-1-5-1-pre-release/#comments Tue, 19 Mar 2013 15:38:29 +0000 Jens Bergensten http://mojang.com/?p=4016

Hey hey!

We finally managed to locate and fix the reported performance issues of 1.5, so now it should be at least similar to the performance of 1.4.7. We also fixed a number of bugs (as seen in the snapshot release last week), and a couple more. The 1.5.1 patch notes are a bit simplified, though…

  • Fixed a bunch of bugs
  • Improved performance
  • Notable: Falling blocks no longer glitch one step
  • Notable: White stitching between blocks should be less frequent
  • Notable: Crash on Mac OS X on “OpenGL Function Not Supported”
  • Notable: Unable to place paintings

We intend to publish the release on Thursday, unless something nasty happens, or Searge of MCP asks us to wait for them to catch up.

Get the snapshot here:

EDIT: The minecraft.jar file has been re-uploaded to fix a null pointer crash. If you downloaded it yesterday (Tuesday), please get it again.

1.5 is barely out of the oven and we already have a new snapshot ready? This is not a 1.6 snapshot, but rather a 1.5.1 bugfix snapshot… We hope to be able to release the 1.5.1 update next week. The fixes are,

  • [MC-250] Ender Dragon can still grief stuff like cobblestone and chests even if the gamerule mobGriefing is set on false.
  • [MC-1794] White stitching on polygon edges / White lines or black dots between blocks
  • [MC-4577] Unable to combine enchanted books for a higher level enchant.
  • [MC-8193] Hopper doesn't try to place items from other slots if unable from first.
  • [MC-8943] Fire doesn't show on 8 layered snow and hopper
  • [MC-11089] Long scoreboard objective titles can be offset screen
  • [MC-11109] Breaking a Container with Items that is connected via a solid block with a Comparator does not update the Comparator
  • [MC-11217] Falling Block entities start visually falling from 1 block higher than they were placed
  • [MC-11236] Paintings popping out / cannot place new ones
  • … and a few Minecraft Realms changes

Watch Minecraft develop over 800 days. It’s pretty http://mojang.com/2013/03/watch-minecraft-develop-over-800-days-its-pretty/ http://mojang.com/2013/03/watch-minecraft-develop-over-800-days-its-pretty/#comments Thu, 14 Mar 2013 10:32:00 +0000 Owen http://mojang.com/?p=3974

Who’d have thought the development of Minecraft could make such a colourful, lively worm-thing? Nathan, that’s who. He used a tweaked version of Gource, along with the Minecraft changelog, to create the video above. Watch full screen for maximum enlightenment. The music comes courtesy of C418‘s in-game discs.

As the team beavers away, the code-beast thrives. Different colours represent different types of files: blue strands are text, red are sounds, grey is java. Things get really interesting when you start looking at specific dates in the evolution of Minecraft. Watch Jens’ get busy when he takes over as lead developer, the codespolsion when the team refactors things for the first time, or the zapping of duplicate files in April 2012.

Very relaxing and oddly satisfying. Enjoy!

Thanks to you, Mojam 2013 raised $517,489 http://mojang.com/2013/03/thanks-to-you-mojam-2013-raised-517489/ http://mojang.com/2013/03/thanks-to-you-mojam-2013-raised-517489/#comments Wed, 13 Mar 2013 15:28:23 +0000 Owen http://mojang.com/?p=3919

A few weeks ago, Mojam 2013 happened; Mojang and a few other indie devs worked on new projects over three days. We live-streamed the whole thing, then shaved off Notch’s beard.

Why did we do this? It was a lot of fun, but it also gave you opportunity to donate towardsBlock by Block and the Electronic Frontier Foundation. Everyone who donated got to download the completed creations and play till their heart’s content.

The response was overwhelming. Here’s a breakdown of the cash raised.

  • Mojam 2013 raised a total of $517,489.25.
  • 86,531 of you handed over cash.
  • The median amount donated was $2.00. The average was $5.98.
  • After payment processor fees $295,553.96 was raised for The Electronic Frontier Foundation and $194,493.28 for Block By Block.

Massive thanks to all who donated – you’re probably a lovely person.

Have a nice day!

Hey!

The Redstone Update is finally out! Get it via the launcher. The changelog was posted in the previous post, so here you have a couple of videos of it instead:

First, the Minecraft 1.5 Song by YourMCAdmin

If that’s a bit too short for you, this one by nativisions is a little bit more in depth (5:38)

And if you want an even longer, here’s one by icecreamstatus (15:06),

We got these YouTube links by the help of the Minecraft Reddit Community, you can see the whole thread here: http://www.reddit.com/r/Minecraft/comments/19ujql/video_summaries_of_15/

Have fun!

// The Minecraft and Minecraft Realms teams

PS. We know the readers of this blog are a little bit more hardcore about Minecraft than most, so we should tell you that a 1.5.1 already is on its way. We plan to snapshot this tomorrow, and hopefully get it out as soon as possible.

Ok! Final snapshot! Honest!* Tomorrow: Pre-release!

The things changed in this snapshot are:

  • Notable change: Dispensers and droppers will now only fire once when they receive a redstone signal. To fire again, the signal must be turned off and on again. (Previously a dispenser would fire whenever it had a signal and a nearby block changed.)
  • [MC-711] Redstone and components stay powered after unloading chunks
  • [MC-846] Dispenser and Dropper shooting out when updated
  • [MC-3458] Server crashes if spaces are input on the console
  • [MC-6223] Night Vision Potions that are edited to last longer create a potentially seizure-inducing flashing sky background.
  • [MC-8022] Furnace interface occasionally closes when adding fuel, deleting all items in the furnace
  • [MC-8597] Named Mobs Don't have Named Babies
  • [MC-10357] Getting into a minecart with a mob in it crashes minecraft
  • [MC-10946] 2 Hoppers funneling unstackable items into a 3rd Hopper at the same time cause the 3rd Hopper to not funnel items into a container
  • [MC-10948] Dispensers continually shoot/use certain items like water buckets and flint&steel
  • [MC-10950] Comparators still giving off power when hopper inventory is empty
  • [MC-10956] Animals can breed over distances up to almost 8 blocks when only seperated by fences
  • [MC-10995] Message "THIS TOO" in console
  • [MC-11019] Full hoppers feeding into full hoppers causes the forward hopper to stall
  • [MC-11044] Adding items to brewing stand using dropper does not change state of comparator

Hey!

This snapshot is a bit late, due to us doing games for charity (to which you still can donate and get to play the games), but you know what they say about the longer you wait… Anyway, we’re still in bug-fixing mode, but getting really close to a Minecraft Redstone Update release now! We intend to get a pre-release out by Thursday, and an official release out next week.

The things changed in this snapshot are:

  • Mobs can now ride stuff that rides other stuff
  • Players riding stuff will keep it when logging off (ie, if you’re on a minecart and log off, you will take that minecart with you)
  • Animated blocks and items in texture packs now requires the animation definition (previously it was optional)
  • Language files have been updated
  • [MC-2555] Cannot Connect To Own Server While Not Online (LAN) / Playername beeing E-Mail address when offline

Mojam is over! Donate, download, and play! http://mojang.com/2013/02/mojam-is-over-donate-download-and-play/ http://mojang.com/2013/02/mojam-is-over-donate-download-and-play/#comments Sat, 23 Feb 2013 23:50:58 +0000 Owen http://mojang.com/?p=3751

Mojam has officially come to an end! That means everyone who’s donated gets to play the games we’ve created over the past four days.

Haven’t donated yet? Don’t fret. The kind folks at Humble Bundle have agreed to keep the Mojam Humble Bundle page up for a little while longer, so it’s not too late to give money to an honourable cause, and get a bundle of great games to play in the process. They will all be available to download in the near future.

Let’s have a quick runthrough of the titles. First, the three four games from Mojang:

Nuclear Pizza War, from Henrik, Johan, and Jens, aka Cyborg Hippos.

Endless Nuclear Kittens from Mattis, Erik, and Mans, aka Giraffmacka.

Battle Frogs from Poi Poi, Nathan, and Kris, aka Striped Zebras.

Nuke the Dinosaurs Blueprint Prototype. This surprise title is still getting worked on by Junkboy, Aron, Jon, and Steven (he’s from Surasshu Sound), but they’ve decided to release the blueprint prototype early.

TEKTONIC from Grapefrukt

Space Hunk from Ludosity

3918 from Oxeye Game Studio

Wasteland Kings from Vlambeer

Low-light from Wolfire Games

Have fun! To reiterate, it’s not too late to enjoy this potpourris of gaming excellence! Just hit up humble bundle, donate, and play!

Mojam 2013 is in full flow! Games are being made! Streams are being watched. Money is getting donated! It’s the perfect time to give you an update on the team’s progress so far. Because you’re all being so nice, I also tracked down NOTCH’s BRAIN (responsible for Minecraft) to get its take on proceedings.

Stripey Zebra

Inspiration: Nuclear. French. Spaceship.
Poi Poi, Nathan, and Kris.

Here’s what Kris had to say about Stripey Zebra’s progress: “Our game is called Battle Toads, because you’re battling toads. You play as a French girl called Annabelle who wakes up on a French colonial spaceship. She later finds out the ship is being invaded by mutant space pirate frogs.

“It’s a side-scrolling platformer.

“We have very little experience with this type of game. The physics is probably the hardest part – getting the collision detection to work, all that stuff.”

NOTCH’S BRAIN: “Drawing inspiration from geniuses such as Lynch and Copperfield, the struggle of Annabelle mirrors that of the developers.”

Cyborg Hippos

Inspiration: Nuclear. Pizza. War.
Henrik, Johan, and Jens.

Here’s what Jens had to say: “It’s a shoot em up. You’re a space pizza defender flying across space on your giant nuclear pizza. It’s attacked by aliens who want your pizza. The challenge is in fending off the aliens without falling off yourself.

“Development has been pretty straightforward so far. Some of the normal trigonometry isn’t actually that hard, but the live stream can cause additional stress if you don’t think of the solution immediately. Now the challenge is to make the game fun. A shortcut to making things fun is to add sound effects, so we’re probably going to do that now.”

NOTCH’S BRAIN: “While the metaphor is a bit rushed, I believe there is a lesson to be learned here for everyone.”

Giraff Macka

Inspiration: Nuclear. Kittens. Endless.
Mattis, Erik, and Mans.

Finally, here’s insight into Giraff Macka’s game, direct from Mans: “It’s a chain reaction shooter with endless nuclear kittens. You play as a girl version of Mattis. We’re still working out where the kittens come from.

“We haven’t really got that far with it. We’re still working out which enemies and weapons you have. You’ll probably end up with loads of different things: homing guns, rapid-fire guns, nukes (obviously), maybe a shotgun.

“You need to get proper chain reactions going to get good power weapons. I have a theory that chain reactions automatically make any game more fun.”

NOTCH’S BRAIN: “Teetering on the edge of sublimely transcending genres and degenerating into total nonsense, this is my least favourite game.”

That’s it for now. Don’t forget to donate at www.humblebundle.com! Speak soon!

Hello again!

So far, 50,192 of you have voted on the words that will eventually inspire our Mojam games. Thanks for the great response. Here are the most popular suggestions so far: Nuclear, French, Endless, War, Kittens, Spaceship and Pizza.

Most of Mojang will be participating in the Jam. Some as skilled mercenaries spreading their skills across teams as required, some as loyal developers/artists for one of three squads formed just a few minutes ago.

Stripey Zebra
Poi Poi
Nathan
Kris

Cyborg Hippos
Henrik
Johan
Jens

Giraffe
Mattis
Erik
Mans

Our live-stream is due to begin at 6:00 CET. Soon afterwards, we’ll draw from the top-rated suggestions to see which words will inspire the three games and start the Mojam proper! See you then.

Surprise! Mojam is happening tomorrow! It’s kicking off at 6pm CET. This is a very special time of the year. Mojang will be split into teams, and each of those teams will create a game inspired by you. We’ll have until midnight on Saturday to complete the creations. You’ll get to play the (wonderful) things we make.

We’re also proud to announce the involvement of five other developers who’ve kindly agreed to donate their time and energy to the project. They’ll be making games too, and their builds will also be included in the final bundle! Exciting eh?

What does this mean for you?

  • You get to watch an exclusive Mojam livestream! It’ll include insight into the development of the games, as well as loads of entertaining challenges organised by Lydia.
  • You get the chance to donate cash towards two charities close to Mojang’s heart: Block by Block and the EFF.
  • Everyone who donates will get to play the final games we create, along with any builds we release during the ‘Jam.
  • Donate above the average contribution and you’ll get entry into exclusive raffles!
  • You get to decide the themes that will help inspire our games. To do that, just pick your two favourite ideas from the list of potentials below. Tomorrow we’ll randomly pick two of the ideas for each game, and use them as inspiration.

Minecraft Papercraft Studio now available for iOS! http://mojang.com/2013/02/minecraft-papercraft-studio-now-available-for-ios/ http://mojang.com/2013/02/minecraft-papercraft-studio-now-available-for-ios/#comments Fri, 15 Feb 2013 10:27:23 +0000 Owen http://mojang.com/?p=3459

There’s nothing quite like a piece of real-life papercraft to show off your love for a video game. Now, thanks to Minecraft Papercraft Studio, you can create a real-life, pixel-perfect papercraft model from a library of over 300,000(!) Minecraft skins. You can also recreate your own skin by entering your username. Simple!

It’s a universal app, so you can download it once and install it on all your iOS devices for $2.99/£1.99/€2.69.

All you need to do is download Minecraft Papercraft Studio, print out the template, and assemble. You’ll need scissors, glue, and a bit of patience to bring your creation to life, but the end result is something you can treasure forever! Watch the trailer below for a more visual explanation:

Creators of the app, 57digital, have also cooked up an in-depth tutorial video for your convenience. What a nice bunch…

Minecraft Papercraft Studio is completely compatible with 57digital’s last app, Minecraft Skin Studio. In fact, if you’re feeling extra creative, you can design or edit a skin using Skin Studio then export it to Papercraft Studio with a few taps. It works the other way round too; you can grab an existing skin and edit before printing out the template. 57digital are also behind Minecraft Explorer: the official guide to all things Minecraft. For more updates, follow them on Twitter and Like their Facebook page.

And here are a few real-life examples of models, all made with Papercraft Studio:

Have fun! Make it a crafty weekend, people.

It’s Monday again, and you know what that means; it’s time to buy a new calendar! We’ve spent the last week or two trying to rewrite the lighting engine, and it’s going okay but unfortunately is too slow to put live. So instead, have some other smaller bugfixes and this complimentary hug: *hug*

  • Slight optimizations to lighting
  • [Bug MC-2196] – Map item placed in item frame experiences Z-fighting
  • [Bug MC-7302] – Nametag of certain mobs too low / too high
  • [Bug MC-9212] – Team colors/prefixes/suffixes are not displayed with @a/@p/@r

Watch the indie talks from MINECON! Learn stuff! http://mojang.com/2013/02/watch-the-indie-talks-from-minecon-learn-stuff/ http://mojang.com/2013/02/watch-the-indie-talks-from-minecon-learn-stuff/#comments Tue, 12 Feb 2013 12:41:36 +0000 Owen http://mojang.com/?p=3328

Minecon 2012 wasn’t just about Minecraft, Scrolls and Cobalt. We were also lucky enough to have a bunch of indie developers attend, along with C418 – the guy responsible for the tinkly Minecraft tunes that you love so much. It was a veritable feast of indie creation.

So they don’t end up dropping into the internet void forever we’ve embedded videos of the talks below. They’re all worth watching, whether you’re an aspiring indie developer looking for tips on how to get started, a gamer interested in the development process, or someone who doesn’t want to miss this intriguing slice of the show. Click each developer’s name to see what they’re up to on Twitter, or just click the title of their game to visit the official sites and to buy their games (an excellent idea).

Sit back, pour yourself a satisfying beverage, and prepare for enlightenment!

You might remember us mentioning Minecraft: Pi Edition a few months ago. It’s a free version of Minecraft that will run on the Raspberry Pi – a credit card-sized computer that can help you learn to program in an accessible, fun way. They’re cheap and relatively easy to set up.

Now Pi Edition is available to download! You can get it at our dedicated blog: pi.minecraft.net.

Read more about the Pi, and find out what you need to get started, at their official site and wiki.

Have fun!

The stream will be embedded into this post once it goes live, and viewable on Johan’s twitch.tv channel. Imagine getting your art in our 2014 Minecraft calendar, winning a heap of prizes, and helping raise money for Block by Block – our collaboration with UN Habitat – in the process. It’s a massive win-win for everyone.

Art submitted by you will feature in our 2014 Wall Calendar, which is getting created with the help of Jinx. All you need to do is draw something inspired and submit it by February the 8th. The community will help choose the winning entries later in the year, and all proceeds from calendar sales will go towards Block by Block.

We’re supplying a theme to keep things light-hearted, but there’s still room to show off your creativity. Here’s the idea we want you to illustrate:

What’s the funniest thing that’s happened to you in Minecraft?

12 winners will be picked from the submissions and each of those will get:

  • A glow in the Dark Creeper Vinyl autographed by Notch and Jens
  • $500 Cash!
  • A $500 J!NX Gift Certificate
  • Their art featured in the official Minecraft 2014 Wall Calendar!

Not too shabby. Visit this link for a template, small print, and submission details. We can’t wait to see what you get up to! Good luck!

The next update for Minecraft Pocket Edition has been submitted for review. This means we should see the update out in one or two weeks, for both iOS and Android. Phew. Lots of you bought Minecraft at Christmas, smashing download records all over the place. The numbers are so massive that even Patrick “master of stats” Geuder raised an eyebrow, and that hardly ever happens. We thought it would be nice to share the numbers. Prepare for an incoming stat attack!

Minecraft
70,808 of your purchased/redeemed Minecraft for PC/Mac on December 25th, and 241,845 during the week of the 24th – 30th. You redeemed a total of 4,177,843 copies throughout the year.

Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition
100,416 of you bought Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition on December 25th, and it was purchased 325, 591 times during Christmas week. Massive congratulations to 4J Studios; they sold 5,002,370 copies of 360 Edition in 2012.

Minecraft: Pi Edition
Minecraft: Pi Edition isn’t released yet, silly. But it is due soon! Visit pi.minecraft.net for early info.

Thanks for purchasing people! We hope you’ve enjoyed the festive period with your friends and family whether you interacted through Minecraft or IRL.

Notes about the new texture pack system

Starting from this snapshot and forward, blocks and items will no longer load their artwork from one big sheet of sprites. Instead, they’ll have individual files for each image they’re using. The benefit from this is that it will be easier for us to support custom blocks and items in the future. It will also allow us to mix and match block artwork resolutions, and make sure that you get graphics for blocks that your current texture pack isn’t updated for.

We’ve written more information about the new texture pack format in the Minecraft wiki, here: http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Texture_Packs

  • Added the Redstone Comparator block (this replaces the Capacitor we talked about at Minecon)
  • Added the Daylight Detector block
  • Added a Hopper block (still work in progress)
  • Added a chest that activates redstone
  • Added weighted pressure plates that detect item stacks
  • Added Block of Redstone block (works as a pushable redstone torch)
  • Added a new ore to the Nether
  • Added a Nether Brick item for crafting Nether Brick blocks
  • A whole bunch of other stuff… Try for instance double-clicking items, or drag-placing them, in the inventory

Minecraft 1.4.7 Pre-release http://mojang.com/2012/12/minecraft-1-4-7-pre-release/ http://mojang.com/2012/12/minecraft-1-4-7-pre-release/#comments Fri, 28 Dec 2012 13:46:32 +0000 Jens Bergensten http://mojang.com/?p=3167

Unfortunately we managed to include two “null pointer exception” cases in 1.4.6, and we feel they should be patched.

This release is compatible with 1.4.6 and has almost no bytecode changes, so mods that have been updated for 1.4.6 should work in 1.4.7 too. The only affected file is the one called “qz”, which is the arrow projectile’s class. This also means that 1.4.6 clients can play on 1.4.7 servers, and 1.4.7 clients on 1.4.6 servers… so we’ll wait until after New Year’s Eve before we publish it in the launcher. Download the pre-release if you want these problems fixed before then!

The fixes are:

  • Fixed crash related to arrows fired from dispensers
  • Fixed a multiplayer crash when using fireworks without a fireworks star
  • Fixed long timeout when checking SRV records

Giving the gift of Minecraft? Do it with festive style… http://mojang.com/2012/12/giving-the-gift-of-minecraft-do-it-with-festive-style/ http://mojang.com/2012/12/giving-the-gift-of-minecraft-do-it-with-festive-style/#comments Thu, 20 Dec 2012 10:08:42 +0000 Owen http://mojang.com/?p=3080

Christmas is coming! And by the looks of our stats so far, 11,424 of you are planning on giving gift codes to your friends and family. It’s an excellent, thoughtful idea.

Emailing someone a code is a wonderful thing to do, but it doesn’t really feel that Christmassy. For this reason, we deployed Junkboy and created a template. Now you can pass on your gift in a physical way with some festive spirit built-in. You can do this with any unredeemed codes you have lying around.

It’s easy to do. First , purchase a gift code on Minecraft.net. Next, log in to your Mojang account, scroll down to the “Codes” bit, and click “Print Christmas Card” to the right of the code you want to gift. Print out the PDF that pops up, fold it as per the bundled instruction sheet, then gently place it under your Christmas tree in time for Christmas Morn! How lovely.

Merry Christmas everyone!

Minecraft Xbox 360 Edition Festive Skin pack on sale http://mojang.com/2012/12/minecraft-xbox-360-edition-festive-skin-pack-on-sale/ http://mojang.com/2012/12/minecraft-xbox-360-edition-festive-skin-pack-on-sale/#comments Wed, 19 Dec 2012 12:48:53 +0000 Owen http://mojang.com/?p=3005

The Festive Skin pack is now available for Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition. It’s on sale for 80 points and comes with 21 festive skins. You can queue up the download right now! Or just load up your console and get it from the dashboard.

On a separate skin-related note, you guys raised an incredible $770,448 by purchasing the Halloween Skin pack. That’s an incredible figure. Especially when you consider that every single penny went to charity. Neither Mojang, Microsoft, or 4J took a cut. The proceeds were split between Child’s Play, Macmillan Cancer Support, Sands Lothians and Block by Block.

Thanks everyone! Here are a few more images of the Skin Pack for your viewing pleasure. And a tweaked version of Jingle Bells which reiterates the info in this post in a melodic fashion (sorry about that, but I’m feeling extremely festive).

To the tune of Jingle Bells

Now a Festive Pack is on sale,
So you can dress all Christmassy,
80 points – you cannot fail,
If you play on 360.

You can wear a Santa suit,
Or look just like his wife,
You will look extremely cute ,
On these festive Christmas nights. Hey!

Jingle Bells, Minecraft sells!
You can play it on holiday.
Oh what fun it is to dig,
Playing solo or in multiplay. Hey!

Have a very Merry Christmas!

Hey hey hey! Snapshot time!

Changes since 1.4.5:

  • Added fireworks (sound effects will come soon)
  • Added enchanted books for enchanting items
  • Plenty of bugs addressed!

“What’s this? This doesn’t sound like a redstone update at all!”, you say. “Indeed,” we say. Thing is, we* suddenly decided we wanted to make sure that you have fireworks for New Year’s Eve, so we’re working in several parallel branches of the code now. One is for the 1.5 “Redstone Update,” and one is now for a 1.4.6 patch update. This update will be out before Christmas, and 1.5 will wait until January (or possibly February).

We’re planning on showing off loads of video footage from our weekend in Paris next week, but in the meanwhile I thought it would be good to highlight our MineCon Tumblr. It’s packed with awesome, all submitted by attendees and community members.

The Tumblr is still open for submissions so if you’ve got any photos left over you’d like to see included, hit the submit button in the top left corner and upload! We’ll get the best ones published ASAP.

Thanks everyone! Have a good day.

Announcing Minecraft Reality for iOS http://mojang.com/2012/11/announcing-minecraft-reality-for-ios/ http://mojang.com/2012/11/announcing-minecraft-reality-for-ios/#comments Sun, 25 Nov 2012 10:18:22 +0000 Owen http://mojang.com/?p=2707

Imagine being able to dump your Minecraft creations into the real world for other people to find. You could put an exploding creeper in your school, a cheeky pig in your garden, or a giant enemy crab on the beach, if you like. The Minecraft Reality app for iOS lets you do just that.

It’s been developed for iOS devices by 13th Lab – a bunch of clever augmented reality folks – with the help of Mojang. The app uses your iOS device’s camera to track the surroundings, before projecting creations onto the landscape. You get to view the mind-boggling results on-screen. You can change the size of your object as you please, and even wander around it to view from different angles. It’s seriously impressive stuff that’s almost guaranteed to make people go “ooooo” and “ahhhhh.”

Here’s an example of the wonder-tech in action.

Thanks to super-clever GPS technology, you’ll be able to plant your creations in specific places in the world for other people to find. They can then boot up the app and view your builds in all their glory. The app also comes with a few pre-loaded models to get you started. Minecraft Reality is available to download now. It costs $1.99.

Please be careful when crossing the road, or operating heavy machinery when using this thing. Accidents are not the Mojang way. For more on Minecraft Reality, visit 13th Lab’s official site.

Minecraft is coming to Raspberry Pi! http://mojang.com/2012/11/minecraft-is-coming-to-the-raspberry-pi/ http://mojang.com/2012/11/minecraft-is-coming-to-the-raspberry-pi/#comments Sat, 24 Nov 2012 08:00:57 +0000 Owen http://mojang.com/?p=2681

Have you ever thought about learning to program? Where would you begin? How much would it cost? What would you need to get things moving?

The Raspberry Pi is a credit card-sized computer that’s a great starting point. It’s cheap, capable, and approachable for newbie programmers. It’s also extremely fun to play around with, no matter your experience with code. Plug it into a TV or monitor, attach a keyboard, and begin.

Soon you’ll be able to play and program with Minecraft on one of the snazzy little devices. Aron and Daniel have dedicated time to porting a version of Minecraft: Pocket Edition that comes with a revised feature set and support for multiple programming languages. We’re calling it Minecraft: Pi Edition, and it will be completely free to download.

The possibilities are massive. You could organise the cheapest LAN party of all time, or use the Pi to learn the fundamentals of programming on a miniscule budget. It’s like hacking your way into Minecraft and modifying the game world with code, a bit like being Notch, Jeb, or Nathan, but arguably more fun and less stressful.

You can start by building structures in the traditional Minecraft way, but once you’ve got to grips with the in-game features, there’s opportunity to break open the code and use programming language to manipulate things in the game world. You’ll be learning new skills through Minecraft.

The Raspberry Pi Foundation are a registered charity. They sell the Pi from $35, and ship them all around the world. It’s already being used in schools to get children interested in programming and help them learn Linux, which Daniel describes as “the operating system of the future.” It’s a great way to widen people’s perspective on what computers can achieve.

We’re extremely excited to be involved, and can’t wait to show you more. Read more about the Pi, and find out what you need to get started, at their official site and dedicated wiki. Minecraft: Pi Edition will be available to download soon.

Block by Block: A Personal Story http://mojang.com/2012/11/block-by-block-a-personal-story/ http://mojang.com/2012/11/block-by-block-a-personal-story/#comments Wed, 21 Nov 2012 17:18:32 +0000 Lydia Winters http://mojang.com/?p=2675

Touchdown in Nairobi, Kenya. It’s my first time in Africa and to say the least I am quite nervous. As a sheltered 25 year old from an upper middle class family the thought of visiting the slums of Kibera was a bit daunting. I prepared myself mentally for seeing people in terrible distress and sadness. News stories of African babies fighting to survive flashed through my head as we drove to the slum with our liaison for UN Habitat.

Kibera is one of the largest slums in Africa with estimates of anywhere from 200,000-700,000 people crammed in less than a two square kilometer radius. It’s also the site for the Block by Block pilot project. The people in the area have a sports field and public grounds in need of a revival. The idea is to use Minecraft to help the community visualize the changes for the area. Instead of looking at a 2D architectural drawing which can be hard for people to visualize they will be able to move within the game and get a feel for what it would be like there when things are changed. It also allows youth, a usually unheard portion of the community, give their input.

Standing in Kibera. Lack of makeup and general tiredness as a result from the trip.
Nairobi

I’d seen the area already within the game. I felt ready. Scared and nervous, but ready. We arrived, waited for our security guards (a necessary precaution), and then started walking towards the middle of Kibera. Then something happened for which I was entirely unprepared. Yes, there were children playing in unsanitary conditions. Yes, I never felt completely safe. Yes, I knew many people there had difficult lives and had experiences beyond what I could ever comprehend. But what I wasn’t prepared for was the hope.

I walked by two little girls hula hooping, something my younger sister and I had done many times together as children. Laughing and smiling, the girls swung their bodies to keep the hula hoops off the ground, hoops made of wire. Wires had been twisted together to form the toys these two small girls used. And there it was… ingenuity. Ingenuity became the theme of everything I saw from that point on. The people were inventive, creative, resourceful, far beyond what I consider myself to be. They use everything they possibly can. Coming from the wastefulness of the United States it was incredible to see how even scraps were repurposed. Could I make a working hula hoop? Probably not. I’ve been trained in a consumerist culture. Buy. Don’t make. On my walk through the slums of Kibera my perception was quickly changed.

Stopping to look at one of the shops along the railroad track in Kibera.
Nairobi

Instantly, the Block by Block project became more real to me. Not only because I was able to stand in the exact area I had seen within Minecraft, but because I saw our purpose. Not to come in and change something to our own accord, but to empower an already incredibly community to have their visions for the area realized.

Buy a Skin Pack. It will help create a public space somewhere around the world using Minecraft through the proceeds raised.

Public space in real life and recreated in Minecraft.
Block by Block

[Block by Block aims to involve youth in the planning process in urban areas by giving them the opportunity to show planners and decision makers how they would like to see their cities in the future. Minecraft has turned out to be the perfect tool to facilitate this process. The three-year partnership will support UN-Habitat to upgrade 300 public spaces by 2016.]

Hey hey!

Unfortunately we have to patch Minecraft again, this time to fix the broken LAN server functionality. Good news is that this only affects the client, so 1.4.5 clients will be able to play on 1.4.4 servers without any problems.

Fixes included:

  • Clients now get the correct IP for LAN servers
  • Fixed the incorrect positions of some particles
  • … and fixes for MC-2507, MC-2508, MC-2500, and MC-2498

Download the pre-release here:

This release will be uploaded to the launcher on Tuesday next week (November 20).

Update: The client jar-file has been updated, this time with particles properly fixed.

Jeepers creepers! Crikey! Jawch! Inoffensive exclamation native to your home country! Minecraft has sold 8 million copies on PC and Mac. That’s a lot. Not as many as the The Sims 2 or Half-Life 2, but more than the Sims 2: Pets and Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty according to this page. It’s a big number, basically.

I asked Jeb for some words to highlight the awesomeness of the sales and got this back: “I can’t think of anything clever to say. It’s simply amazing.”

Notch replied with this: 69I960EHE0A4A0IVG0EHE02500R4R0G1T30PLJ00V6V0EHE0V1U01V10U5U0VGV0V4R

Minecraft 1.4.4 Pre-release http://mojang.com/2012/11/minecraft-1-4-4-pre-release/ http://mojang.com/2012/11/minecraft-1-4-4-pre-release/#comments Thu, 08 Nov 2012 14:13:06 +0000 Jens Bergensten http://mojang.com/?p=2588

There were two important new problems in the 1.4.3 pre-release that we had to fix, so here’s a pre-release of 1.4.4 instead! We hope to publish it in the launcher in the middle of next week.

The changes since 1.4.3 is:

  • Another 20 or so issues fixed, full list here: 1.4.4 issue list
  • Fixed the “unable to swim upwards” bug (prevented a 1.4.3 official release)
  • Fixed the “placed torches jump between walls” bug (also prevented a 1.4.3 release)

Minecraft Gift Cards now available in the US http://mojang.com/2012/11/minecraft-gift-cards-now-available-in-the-us/ http://mojang.com/2012/11/minecraft-gift-cards-now-available-in-the-us/#comments Tue, 06 Nov 2012 12:55:51 +0000 Owen http://mojang.com/?p=2535

US residents! Now you can buy Minecraft for PC/Mac in real-life stores! Very exciting stuff.

The pre-paid cards spell good news for many reasons.

  • Credit card details are no longer required to buy Minecraft. Handy if your mum/gran/rabbit doesn’t like handing over numbers online.
  • You can buy Minecraft for real-life money taken from a wallet, pocket, or piggy bank. Not just any wallet, pocket, or piggy bank – one you’re allowed to access. Otherwise it’s stealing. Stealing is bad.
  • It’s now possible to slip Minecraft into a birthday/Christmas card as a surprise bonus gift. What a nice thing to do.
  • Cards can be sent anywhere in the world! So long as they have an internet connection, the recipient can redeem the code and download the game. Cheap postage, maximum Minecraft.

Here’s how you redeem your card. You can buy them in your nearest Walmart, Target, or Best Buy. Apologies if you’re interested in the cards but are based outside the US; we’re working on expanding their availability.

Have fun!

The winners of our Facebook cover competition http://mojang.com/2012/11/the-winners-of-our-facebook-cover-competition/ http://mojang.com/2012/11/the-winners-of-our-facebook-cover-competition/#comments Tue, 06 Nov 2012 10:33:42 +0000 Owen http://mojang.com/?p=2499

More winners! Thanks to everyone who entered our Facebook cover competition.

We’ve already updated our page with Zelduc’s fine work. A bold art style, some Facebook-themed imagery, and a flying Creeper were more than enough to take the number one spot.

We’ve also picked out three runners up who we think deserve a mention. If all goes to plan, these should be featured on 57Digital’s Minecraft Explorer Pro app in the near future.

As always, thanks to everyone who entered! We appreciate your dedication and hard work.

Stylish, colourful, blocky. And packed with Mojangstas. Thanks Fran Sánchez!

So friendly, yet so Minecraft. Thanks Antonina Osnos.

Everyone likes cake and pigs, right? Thanks @Dmumah!

The best of your scary screenshots… http://mojang.com/2012/11/the-best-of-your-scary-screenshots/ http://mojang.com/2012/11/the-best-of-your-scary-screenshots/#comments Mon, 05 Nov 2012 12:27:20 +0000 Owen http://mojang.com/?p=2440

Thanks for all the entries to our scariest screenshot competition! I’ve seen a lot of horrific images over the past few days. Now I’m too petrified to leave the office alone.

We had a lot of pitch-black screens and images of a disconnected Minecraft launcher. They’re both horrifying, but after seeing over over 50 of each, they kind-of lose their impact. Thanks to everyone who sent them in though. :)

After much deliberation, we’ve settled on this image as the scariest of all. It was extremely hard to choose, and we received thousands of entries, so don’t be disappointed if your entry didn’t make the cut.

Mega-congratulations to Stavrakidis Christos!

We had loads of haunted houses submitted, but Stavrakidis’ attention to detail gave him the edge. We’ll be in touch once your prize is prepared. :)

Choas’ zombie was bloody. Awesome. Big.

Edward’s screenshot had a sense of adventure that many screenshots lacked.

Ethan Harrington’s was the most extreme of all the extreme close-ups.

I appreciate the simplicity of iext’s image.

Maximum zombie action from Martin Z

…and minimal zombie action from Zach K.

Since the release of the Pretty Scary Update we’ve been super-busy trying to fix as many reported issues as possible. We’ve now reached the point where we’ve fixed so many that we spend more and more time wondering “haven’t we fixed that already?” and “I wonder if this will break anything else…” In other words, it’s time to look forward to a new official update!

The changes since 1.4.2 is:

  • Over 100 issues fixed, full list here: 1.4.3 issue list
  • Notable: The missing song “where are we now” is now available, but called “wait”
  • Notable: Random falling damage due to lag fixed
  • Notable: Falling damage when riding minecarts fixed
  • Notable: Enchanted book exploit fixed
  • Notable: Slimes have correct collision box
  • Notable: Signs no longer lose their text client-side

If nothing serious happens, we intend to release 1.4.3 next Wednesday.

Halloween Charity Skin Pack on Xbox! :D http://mojang.com/2012/10/halloween-charity-skin-pack-on-xbox-d/ http://mojang.com/2012/10/halloween-charity-skin-pack-on-xbox-d/#comments Fri, 26 Oct 2012 10:11:53 +0000 Daniel Kaplan http://mojang.com/?p=2409

Halloweeeeeeeeeen!
Hey hey!

Today we are releasing a very special Halloween Skin Pack for Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition. It’s special because all proceeds will go charity! The Skin Pack is 160MSP and all 160MSP (about 2 bucks) will go to good causes. 4j Studios, Microsoft and we have chosen different charities where the proceeds will go. We chose the Block by Block project where we are supporting UN Habitat to rebuild different places throughout the world.

It’s been made by a bunch of great developers (hello Rare, I loved your games when I was a kid!) around the world. I’m super happy that we managed to organize this, and I want to say thanks to all the developers that helped make this happen, but also to you. You get awesome skins AND do something great at the same time. And this is the first time the skins got capes! :)

To read more about which charities we have chosen to donate the money to, please go here.

To see all the skins go here

And if you want to go bananas and support this skin pack now, go here :)

Announcing Minecraft Skin Studio! http://mojang.com/2012/10/announcing-minecraft-skin-studio/ http://mojang.com/2012/10/announcing-minecraft-skin-studio/#comments Thu, 25 Oct 2012 17:12:30 +0000 Owen http://admin.mojang.com/?p=1962

The clever guys at 57 Digital have released a new app for iOS that lets you create and rate Minecraft skins from the comfort of your device. Minecraft Skin Studio also lets you upload the skin to Minecraft.net via your profile page. Very handy for the artistic among you, and surprisingly addictive to use.

It’s so easy to use that Lydia managed to download it and create her own custom skin in the time it’s taken me to write this post. And it’s the first she’s ever made!

This is only the third app officially approved by Mojang, so you know it’s top quality stuff that’ll get regularly updated. The other two available for download are Minecraft Explorer Pro (also made by 57 digital) and Minecraft Seeds Pro (made by JN Interactive). They’re also worth checking out if you’re a Minecraft player with an iOS device.

If Minecraft Skin Studio sounds like your cup of tea, download and get creative! Looking forward to seeing your work!

Busy day on the Mojang blog indeed! Don’t forget to check out the other posts for info on the bug tracker, Minecon and our Pretty Scary Screenshot competition!

However, I need to inform you that we’ve uploaded a 1.4.2 version of Minecraft. This version will be released in the launcher tomorrow morning (Central European time zone). What we fixed was,

  • Fixed a severe memory leak in the server. Big thanks to Rickard Åberg and John Marzano for helping me locate this problem.
  • Corrected rendering of fences and cobblestone walls

Again, for clarity:

  • Release date: Thursday October 25

Introducing the Minecraft Bug Tracker! http://mojang.com/2012/10/introducing-the-minecraft-bug-tracker/ http://mojang.com/2012/10/introducing-the-minecraft-bug-tracker/#comments Wed, 24 Oct 2012 14:00:24 +0000 Warren Loo http://admin.mojang.com/?p=2275

Minecraft Bug Tracker

Mojang now has a proper Minecraft Bug Tracker for the community to use! Many of you guys have been asking us for a real bug tracker instead of using the Minecraft Wiki, so I was put on the task of working with Atlassian to make that happen using their fantastic issue tracker, JIRA.

Although this new Minecraft bug tracker will mostly be community organized and run, it will be the official location to report bugs in Minecraft that we’ll be keeping an eye on. Although we’re currently only accepting bug reports for Minecraft 1.4.1 pre-release, we’ll be using this new bug tracker for all future releases of Minecraft. If you’re already familiar with JIRA and want to get right into reporting a bug, go check out the new Minecraft Bug Tracker here!

Otherwise, we have a Help article containing helpful tips and an easy to follow guide on how to write a helpful Minecraft bug report here. Read on for the surprisingly awesome story of how our new Minecraft bug tracker came to be and our relationship with Atlassian developed.

The awesome story…

When we were looking for the perfect service to use for our Minecraft bug tracker, we had to focus on two things: it had to be powerful enough to actually be useful and it had to be relatively easy to use. If you have any experience with issue trackers, you’ll know that it is really difficult to find one that isn’t entirely developer focused and too complicated for non-tech savvy users to use. There are plenty options out there, but they’re either too powerful and complicated or too simple and watered down.

Enter Atlassian’s JIRA, their answer to issue trackers. Having used it extensively and successfully for the Bukkit project, I was fully aware of how powerful JIRA was. As such, it was a clear place for us to start evaluating the options we had and we quickly found out how flexible and customisable, as well as powerful, it was after some tinkering. With JIRA, we feel that we’re able to achieve the important balance we need that provides the community with the right tools to properly manage and report bugs, while continuing to be easy to use.

With that in mind, we sent an email to Atlassian, let them know of our plan to set up a proper Minecraft Bug Tracker and asked if they could help us out. To our surprise, they’re huge fans of Minecraft and immediately offered to help us out, providing us with a free JIRA license and whatever guidance we needed. In fact, they love Minecraft so much, they even used it to showcase their improved JIRA developer’s API for JIRA v5.0 in a cool video. So, it’s thanks to Atlassian for being awesome, supportive and lovers of Minecraft that we’re able to provide the community with a fantastic and powerful Minecraft bug tracker.

How to help out!

Want to know how to write helpful bug reports for us? Just follow this simple guide and you’ll be well on your way! If you’ve ever wanted to help us improve Minecraft, reporting bugs is a great way to do so.

If you want to go a step further, you can also help us out by testing reported bugs and letting us know if you’re able to reproduce them, as well as helping people put together great bug reports on the Minecraft forums so they’re ready to submit them to the bug tracker.

Happy bug hunting!

Minecraft 1.4.1 Pre-release! http://mojang.com/2012/10/minecraft-1-4-1-pre-release/ http://mojang.com/2012/10/minecraft-1-4-1-pre-release/#comments Tue, 23 Oct 2012 12:52:41 +0000 Jens Bergensten http://mojang.com/?p=2344

A day -1 patch! Lovely! No but seriously, there was a big issue causing mobs to suffocate and fall through wooden floors that we really needed to fix. The full list of fixes are…

  • Fixed mobs glitching through wooden floors
  • Fixed players glitching through Beacons
  • Fixed Redstone Repeaters getting stuck in ‘on’ state
  • Bats spawn less frequently
  • A number of minor font fixes
  • Activated the Wither painting
  • Fixed wet wolves looking way too scary
  • Tweaked naming costs in the Anvil
  • Tweaked enchantment points reward for smelting
  • Fixed bug that allowed any item to be placed in the armor slots
  • Fixed mob spawners spawning too quickly

Since we do these pre-releases mainly to prepare modders and server admins (and not to find and fix bugs), we’ve decided to push the release of 1.4(.1) one day to Thursday, October 25. Again, since I know this is a lot of text to read:

  • Release date: Thursday October 25

Pretty Scary Update incoming… scare us silly! http://mojang.com/2012/10/pretty-scary-update-incoming-scare-us-silly/ http://mojang.com/2012/10/pretty-scary-update-incoming-scare-us-silly/#comments Tue, 23 Oct 2012 08:39:33 +0000 Owen http://www.mojang.com/?p=2305

The Pretty Scary update is almost here! It’ll arrive on Thursday if all goes to plan. I fear it.

Wither and his army of minions, scary zombies that infect you, scary bats, scary witches, and tougher AI will all be included. Then there’s beacons, carrots on sticks, controllable pigs, carrots, potatoes, pumpkin pie, anvils and – perhaps the scariest thing we’ve ever put in Minecraft – FLOWER POTS. Oh man. Expect bug fixes and tweaks aplenty.

As a celebration of the update, we thought we’d run a competition rooted in fear. The winner will get a foam pickaxe signed by every member of the team. That’s probably worth a significant amount of money on eBay, if you’re into that kind of thing (shame on you).

Read on for instructions on how to enter, if you dare.

  • Take a scary screenshot in Minecraft. It has to be a screenshot, not a piece of fan art.
  • Make it the the scariest screenshot you’ve ever taken. One influenced by fear, impending danger, pain, anxiety; that kind of thing. You can wait for tomorrow’s update if you like, or submit it right away if you already have something in mind.
  • Submit the screenshot to the Hej Mojang page before the end of October 30th, CEST.
  • Wait for us to judge the submitted screenshots.
  • Cross your fingers and hope you win!

That’s it! We look forward to seeing your entries. Have a nice day!

BOO!

Our top Mojangsta moments! http://mojang.com/2012/10/our-top-mojangsta-moments/ http://mojang.com/2012/10/our-top-mojangsta-moments/#comments Thu, 18 Oct 2012 14:52:12 +0000 Owen http://admin.mojang.com/?p=2025

Mojang is two-years-old! We’re having a birthday meal in the office this evening but, sadly, there’s not enough table room for you guys. Soz!

To compensate, I asked everyone in the office for their most memorable Mojang moment so far. Then I censored the worst ones and pasted the results below.

It would be great to hear your favourite bits of Mojang history too. Tweet them with the hashtag #mojangmoments so we can find them easily. We’ll show off the best ones at a later date.

Enjoy!

Owen – @bopogamel

Markus Persson – Creator of Minecraft and 0x10c. Founder of Mojang
“My favorite moment was GDC in 2011. I got to meet a lot of industry people I admire and respect a lot, did a lot of fun interviews, and to top it all off Minecraft won like a godzillion awards, both at the GDCA and at the IGF awards. It was incredibly humbling and incredibly confidence boosting at the same time.”

MineCon Event November 17, 2011 17-33-20
Henrik Pettersson – 2D Artist on Scrolls
“Without a doubt, MineCon 2011. Seeing all the people and their passion for Minecraft made it so much more real than all the YouTubes, pictures and internet people.”

MineCon Event November 19, 2011 17-12-42Carl Manneh – CEO and founder of Mojang
“There are many favorite moments in the two years working with Mojang. One that come to mind is the moment backstage after the closing ceremony at MineCon 2011. A fantastic feeling of “we did it” and excitement for the after party with Deadmau5 at XS. An epic moment indeed.”

Patrick Geuder - Business Developer and Data Warehouse Manager
“Most of Mojang attended Deadmau5′s concert in Stockholm. Since he’s a great fan, we where invited backstage. Uneasy, I wanted to break the ice. I walked over to Deadmau5, pulled up my wallet with pack of fake Creeper tattoos and said: “I see you have a lot of gaming tattoos, would you like this?” He laughed and showed his arm, complete with a real creeper tattoo.”

Jakob Porser - Lead Designer on Scrolls
“Before we got an office, Markus and I worked out of his kitchen. The day we received and set up the computers on his kitchen table was an awesome day. Also, the big award day at GDC 2011 when it rained awards over Minecraft and Markus got blisters on his feet from walking up to the podium again and again and again.”

Jens Bergensten - Minecraft Developer
“For me it’s probably when we celebrated one million sales by going to karaoke and having Jakob sing “Hooked on a Feeling.” Either that, or when we took Notch’s jet to visit Vlambeer in Utrecht, Netherlands. That was awesome!”

Markus “Junkboy” Toivonen – Artist
“My favorite moment is the all-nighter we pulled during our Mojam. We were a bunch of people crammed together in the tiny ‘artist’s room’ at the old office. Fueled by red bull, pizza and Cantonese 80′s pop, we drew and coded while Stockholm froze to ice outside our windows. It was excruciating, but some of the most fun I’ve had working at Mojang.”

Owen Hill – CWO
“I’d been at Mojang for just over a week before Jakob assembled his cardboard box fort. I attempted to infiltrate it to gain information vital to my working day. I failed. Markus was suspicious that Jakob had genuinely lost his mind, but he took a photo and tweeted it anyway.”

Pax 2011
Måns Olson – Game developer on Scrolls
“Is ‘all of the moments’ a valid answer? PAX was something else for me. I’d never been to a big games conference before – meeting people in the booth, playing Scrolls and Cobalt with them, and everything surrounding that was fantastic.”

Kristoffer Jelbring – Web Developer
The first Mojam was a great experience for me. I had only started a few weeks earlier, so it was pretty-much the first time I truly got to witness the craziness that is Mojang up close. With little to no planning in advance we pulled off making a nice little game, had loads of fun, and raised a bunch of cash for charity. It was an amazing weekend!

Tobias Möllstam – Force of Good
My first day was pretty cool. 2pp started filming their documentary, Jeb showed of his octopuses that he crunched during the holidays (establishing himself as a Minecraft dev), and later we drank champagne from coffee cups when the IGF nominations were announced. It was also a bit chaotic, Mojang has just moved from one room in that apartment to the entire thing! On that night I realised that Delicato balls and peanut butter makes an excellent dinner.

Lydia Winters – Director of Fun
One of my best moments was interviewing with the guys outside E3 2011. I couldn’t even believe it was happening, that there was a possibility I could work for Mojang. My life was a wreck at the time and suddenly I had the opportunity of a lifetime. I remember needing to google, “where is Sweden?” This was just the start of the most amazing year and a half of my life. Now there are too many incredible memories to ever pick a true favorite.

MineCon Event November 19, 2011 18-06-18
Vu Bui
One of my favorite Mojang-related memories was on my birthday. We were in the new office, and there was cake (expected) and then singing (unexpected)! The singing was special… I’ve been sung to by groups on my birthday before. But the swedish birthday song, sung by Swedes… was memorable.

Karin Severinson – CFO
One of my favourite moments was when I was hired by Carl a couple of months before I was actually going to start working at Mojang. That made the last months of my maternity leave so great because I knew I was going to work at an awesome place when I went back to work. :)

Johan Bernhardsson – Game developer on Minecraft: Pocket Edition
One of my favorite was the first day of my second week. Almost all the office were at GDC. Karin, Carl and I was sitting in what used to be the old gaming room. The room was incredibly orange. That’s what I associated with Mojang for the first few weeks, the orange company.

Leonard Axelsson – Developer at Mojang
My favorite Mojang memory is from when we went to GDC earlier this year. GDC itself was really sweet but the best part was spending that much time together with all the other Mojang people that went. I feel like I got to know all of them a lot better :)

Jon Kågström – Game Developer
“My first memorable memory was before I worked at Mojang. I found it very enjoyable just to watch the sales counter on minecraft.net keep ticking. While I worked on Minecraft it was very cool to first hand experience the engagement of the community as they are so involved in the game; that was crazy. Another highlight was developing the Scrolls bots and seeing them improve in the weekly office tournaments, that was also a lot of fun.”

Nathan Adams – Game Developer
PAX Prime. Seeing all these families coming to view our panel and our booth – so many kids who love our games, and the parents who support them. It always surprises me to see just how much Minecraft has a positive effect on people, and it’s really awesome to see how it brings them together. A few people later told me how they enjoyed talking to Mojang as people instead of a generic company. I feel like that defines how we work; we’re all individuals with our own strengths and weaknesses. We may be beaten alone, but not together!

Minecraft Snapshot 12w42b (Preprerelease!) http://mojang.com/2012/10/minecraft-snapshot-12w42b-preprerelease/ http://mojang.com/2012/10/minecraft-snapshot-12w42b-preprerelease/#comments Thu, 18 Oct 2012 12:48:08 +0000 Jens Bergensten http://admin.mojang.com/?p=2233

Here’s the next snapshot, 12w42b! We are pushing these very rapidly now because we need to get ready for the 1.4 pre-release (which needs to be out before the official release on October 24). Since yesterday’s snapshot we’ve done…

  • Falling sand now prope ]]>
  • The redstone repeater lock mechanism is now slightly more stable / predictable. It’s still not 100% as we want it, but fixing it completely will require bigger changes that we’ve planned for Minecraft 1.5.
  • Fixed tooltip width for renamed items
  • Added a number of sound events, but the sound effects are not added yet
  • Server ping will now tell if the server and client have mismatching protocol versions
  • Updated translation files

  • Bats no longer trample crops or trigger pressure plates
  • Redstone repeaters can be “locked” (fixed output) by having a powered repeater connected to its left or right side
  • Added an option to hide a server’s IP address
  • Updated language files

We now have a Minecraft Developers blog! http://mojang.com/2012/10/we-now-have-a-minecraft-developers-blog/ http://mojang.com/2012/10/we-now-have-a-minecraft-developers-blog/#comments Tue, 16 Oct 2012 14:19:11 +0000 Warren Loo http://admin.mojang.com/?p=1990

Hey guys,

As part of our process of better involving the community in the design and development of the Minecraft API, I’ve been working on setting up a Minecraft Developer blog called “Minecraft: Into the Void”.

This blog will be used by the Minecraft team to share developer related articles and information. It will cover things like: extremely technical write-ups that break down new features we’ve added to Minecraft that developers or map makers might find useful. Or articles detailing the use of a new tool we’ve created for the community’s use.

It will also be the central location for me to post Minecraft API related topics, information and announcements so developers don’t have to check several different places for news. Basically, the Minecraft Developer blog will be our space to nerd out unashamedly, do and share what we love, and we are really excited about it.

If you’re a developer and think this might interest you, come check it out:
Minecraft: Into the Void – the Minecraft Developers blog

The launch of this blog and the Minecraft API proposal system are just the beginnings of my work to create an official Minecraft developers community and ecosystem (as you might have guessed from the new dev.minecraft.net subdomain). I am excited to work with the many developers in our awesome community and for what the future has in store!
